For those who didn’t catch it, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg was interviewed on 60 Minutes.
You might be wondering what the interview has to do with Internet Marketing. Well, watch the first segment of the interview closely. In it, Zuckerberg talks about new changes to the Facebook site, as well as the company’s broader goal of bringing people together by having them share information about their lives. Zuckerberg’s vision for social networking is the perfect illustration of the power of social media marketing.
As Zuckerberg explains, social media allows not only individuals but also organizations and businesses, large and small, to prosper because of the limitless potential of word-of-mouth in the 21st century. Indeed, not only does social media marketing allow small businesses to prosper, it is explicitly designed to help spread the word of businesses that are popular with their client base. Whereas 10 years ago a small business in a small media market would have trouble growing beyond a certain point, the power of social media marketing provides all business with the same, limitless media market. That is, the world wide web.
For other good sources on the vision of Facebook and social media at large, this New Yorker profile of Zuckerberg is an informative read. As is this essay on the Facebook movie, The Social Network.
